Viola M. Newby, 84 of DeKalb died Friday, July 27, 2012 at Kishwaukee Community Hospital.
She was born Sept. 17, 1927 in Elgin. The daughter of Edwin and Alta (Symonds) Fritz. She was married to Wayne Newby for 52 years and they enjoyed traveling and visiting many tourist sites. They loved their rustic family cabin in Copper Harbor, MI, where she summered as a child.
Viola was a devoted business owner of Newby Oil for over 50 years and worked relentless hours in the family business. When she would do book work at her table, she would always have on cartoons. Her favorite actor was Cary Grant and "The Bishop's Wife" was her favorite movie.
Viola loved nature, animals and birds, especially cardinals. She was an avid Cubs fan, a good whistler, loved to cook and was a gracious hostess. A collector of foreign currency, coins and stamps. Viola took great joy in decorating her 13 foot Christmas trees with hundreds of ornaments and lights for her families delight. Her tree had to be decorated by her son's birthday, December 16th.
She is survived by her son, David Newby of DeKalb; a doting grandmother to Chance (Karen) Newby of Belvidere and Zachary (Valerie Lawrence) Newby; and great grandmother to MacKenzie, Cody, Emma and Lily.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wayne in 2003;one sister, Muriel Fritz; one grand-daughter, Ciara; her daughter-in-law, Rebecca Newby; and her dog Lassie.
Her Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 1st from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Butala Funeral Home and Crematory in Sycamore, with a prayer service at 7:00 PM, with Rev. Robert C. Kinnear officiating. A private burial will take place at the Lakewood Memorial Park in Elgin.
